Chapter Seventeen
----------------------------
Paula had always loved the way she looked in white. The way her tan skin seemed to glow against the sweet hues always put a smile on her face, but today she didn’t glow, she radiated with a vibrant beauty beyond compare. Today was the day she felt she been waiting for, striving for her entire life, though sometimes it felt like an uphill battle she didn’t want to be a part of anymore, she was grateful it had finally come. Today, though it wasn’t her first wedding day or even her second, it was to be her last, the day where saying ‘I Do’ meant everything. She was to become one with the only person she felt really ever loved her. She could see it in his eyes at any given moment he looked at her. His smile let her know that she was the most important person in his life. Everything that had ever happened between them had built them into the couple they had become now. Today was their day, the day they would always remember.
Paula could hardly breathe as she looked at herself in the mirror. Her hair was falling perfectly in lose ringlet curls down to the middle of her back, the dark sultry brown contrasting with the pristine white of the gown. She’d colored her hair just for the occasion, Simon always loved her hair in the rich chocolaty colors of her youth. Her gown fit perfectly, off the shoulders, made in the most delicate, expensive fabric she could find. She held a beautiful bouquet of pink roses in her hand, adding just the right touch of color. Everything about her had been perfectly crafted, just the way she wanted it. The wedding had been planned down to every single detail, and finally Paula could breathe knowing it was all worth it. Well she could breathe if she wasn’t a ball of nerves, but those were to be expected, it was after all her wedding day.
Today, on the beach in front of five hundred people, she would become one with Simon and start their life together finally as a married couple. She was running on a high that couldn’t be taken away from her, not by anyone, no matter how hard they tried. They were moving forward and had never been so in love.
Paula had planned everything except one detail. She let Simon pick the place, well actually she made him pick the place.
“I don’t see why you’ve put this on my shoulders love, it’s probably the most important detail.”
“No, Simon, the most important detail for me is you. I want people to look at the location and think ‘This is Simon!’”
“So the playboy mansion it is!”
She had playfully smacked him before he wrestled her to the ground tickling her. He loved to hear her laugh, and that day had been no exception. Each moment he strived to see her smile, to feel her body against his, to know that she loved him.
Paula sighed remembering that day. It had seemed so long ago that they had tickled each other on her living room floor. Wedding plans as of lately had been a hard topic to talk about without fighting, but Paula knew that was only because it was becoming more stressful. She promised herself the stress and hardship that had rained down on their relationship would leave with single statuses.
“Five hundred people? Paula we don’t need that many people there!”
“Simon. It’s our day and we need to share it with our friends and family.”
“I don’t have that many friends or family. That’s ridiculous.”
“I thought you wanted this.” She said tears sliding down her cheeks.
“No. All I wanted was you. I don’t want to share you with five hundred other people. When will I have to stop sharing you? When will you finally be only mine?”
He had walked out and slept at his house that night. She hated him for make her sleep alone, and she woke up every hour or so, missing him, reaching across the bed to feel nothing but emptiness.
Him and the way she loved him.
“Paula. It’s time.” Her sister Wendy was there to take her to the ceremony. Simon said if he couldn’t see her dress, she couldn’t see the place he picked. With no veil and no shoes, she felt the sand move underneath her feet as she walked towards her future.
She could see it after turning the corner onto the beach. Simon had done a wonderful job. Everyone was seated on white chairs upon the sand leading almost up to the water. Flower petals were scattered on the sand to create an aisle for her walk down. Everything was perfect.
The music began to play, and Paula readied herself for the final walk of her single life, with all eyes on her she took her first step. Then suddenly the music stopped.
Paula searched every face, seeing all the familiar ones but one.
Paula couldn’t see him.
She didn’t understand what was going on, and then she saw her mother and father walking towards her, with Jimmy close behind. Her entire body cringed, knowing inside what they were about to say. Harry walked slowly towards his beautiful daughter, the look of complete sorrow written in the lines upon his face.
“Darling… he’s not here.”
The words seemed to echo over her. Her body took over from her mind and she fell to her knees in the sand, devastated. Her body start to ache with the feeling of being broken. She had trusted him, she had given him everything only for him to run scared away from her. She didn’t care that five hundred of their closest friends and family were seated, craning their necks to see her face, she cried, sobbed laying in her beautiful gown. Wendy handed Paula her cell phone, coaxing her to listen to the voicemail.
“It’s from him. Maybe it explains something.” Wendy knew her words were leaving her mouth in vain. Nothing could explain this, nothing.
Paula’s hand was shaking as she pressed in her password.
“Paula…” His voice sounded heavy, as if saying her name was the most taxing thing at that moment. “I, well I just can’t.”
It was all he said. There was no explaining, no apologizes no confessions of love. Paula’s tears fell harder, sobs increasing to a devastating level. She was broken and left alone by him.
Him and his so called love for her.
She hated him for saying things he didn’t mean, promising things he would never do.
Her and her willingness to trust him.
She hated herself for trusting him, for loving him.
People started to file out of their chairs, those who came for Simon first, but Paula didn’t care. She pulled herself together and began to walk towards the ocean. Ryan followed her from his seat in the front row.
The water felt just right on her toes and she stood there watching the sun set not caring about anything anymore.
“Paula, he-“
“Ryan, don’t. Don’t defend him. He was afraid and his fear got the best of him.”
“Well, yeah… maybe.”
They stood together in silence until finally Paula spoke again.
“He did such a beautiful job… Picking this wonderful place for us.”
